MY FATHER IS STILL DYING

My father is still dying.
His death is emergent.
Every day we check
the fields for new
shoots, new growth. We
have faith, here in
the white house. We tell
each other rum secrets.
We wait for him as if he
just slipped out hear-
ing the call of blackbirds.
